Eat Less and Exercise More To Lose Weight?
Weight loss Gurus: They tell you all you have to do is eat less and exercise more. The weight loss gurus are all young and thin.
Here’s the lie: How do you know that they ever had a weight issue? How do you know how long they’ve been able to maintain their weight loss. Losing weight is the easy part- maintaining it is next to impossible.
The facts: 95% of people who lose weight regain it within a few months to 2 years. Even the “lifestyle change” that these gurus promote will not prevent you from regaining weight- because regaining the weight you lost is nature’s method of keeping you alive. It’s like trying to breathe less! Sure, you can hold your breath for just so long, and then your body is going to force you to breathe.
And even IF you are able to starve yourself for the rest of your life, the MAJORITY of people who still under eat will damage their metabolisms and slow it down so much that you won’t be able to eat the same amount of food and still maintain your weight loss! Try eating 30% less, and then 30% less than that after you’ve “plateaued”!!
Minnesota Starvation Study
This is what we’ve learned from serious long-term scientific research done during WW2 on conscientious objectors who volunteered for a study on starvation instead of fighting. The majority of them said that they wish they had gone to war instead of torturing themselves in this study. Starving themselves (and they were eating more than most women on a diet) results in LONG-TERM health and psychological problems.
Any one who guarantees that you will lose weight is either lying or ignorant. But there is one thing that you can do to increase your chances of being healthy, and having your body reflect that healthy state: Learn how to stop eating from stress.
Yes, stress is the missing link in weight gain. The vast majority of people who have gained weight can point to a stressful event that started their stress eating, and their increased weight. Once you learn how to control your stress (which by itself can increase your weight without even overeating!!) your weight is more likely to self-adjust WITHOUT dieting.
Furthermore, the thing that makes people BINGE eat is dieting! You would never binge eat on salad or vegetables. That’s because you never deny yourself those foods. The only foods you binge eat are the “devil foods” – the ones you say you can control yourself around. Once something is forbidden, it is the very thing you want!
But the one thing I can assure you is that hating your body adds to the stress and changing your physiology. And blaming yourself for diet failure just adds fuel on that fire. Nature is doing its best to keep you alive and prevent you from starving. THAT is why you get hungrier, focus on thoughts about food, feel tired and all the tricks that Mother Nature can pull out to get your weight back to where you started. It is NOT you fault! I know it’s really hard to deal with an ignorant public that thinks it’s OK to fat shame and bully people who are heavier – and when you don’t know the facts about weight loss, you tend to believe them. Accepting yourself, and calming your stress will improve your mental and physical health and be the foundation to maintaining a healthy weight and getting control over stress eating.
